Clinical Case Report: CO₂ Laser Removal of Facial Moles
Case Presentation A 35‑year‑old man presented with a pigmented lesion on the left cheek. On closer examination, the lesion was composed of two adjacent melanocytic nevi. One was darker in color with a deeper dermal root, while the other was lighter in pigmentation and more superficial. Both lesions were clinically benign, confirmed by examination and dermoscopic evaluation. The patient expressed concern about the cosmetic appearance and requested removal for aesthetic improvement.
Treatment Given the patient’s preference for a good cosmetic outcome, CO₂ laser ablation was chosen. The laser was applied with controlled energy to vaporize the lesions layer by layer. Care was taken to address the deeper root of the darker mole while minimizing collateral damage to surrounding tissue.
Post‑operative Course Immediately after the procedure, two superficial wounds were present at the sites of the removed moles.
- Healing phase: Within two weeks, the scabs detached spontaneously, revealing immature scars.
- Scar evolution: Over the following months, the scars gradually faded. By five months post‑procedure, the lighter mole site had healed completely without any visible trace. The darker mole site left a mildly depressed, skin‑colored scar, but the redness had fully resolved.
Discussion This case illustrates the effectiveness of CO₂ laser in removing compound facial nevi with minimal downtime. The differential depth of the two lesions influenced the healing outcome: the superficial mole healed without residual scarring, while the deeper mole left a subtle depressed scar. Nonetheless, the overall cosmetic result was satisfactory, and the patient reported high satisfaction.
Conclusion CO₂ laser ablation provides a safe and cosmetically favorable option for benign facial moles, especially when patients seek minimal scarring and rapid recovery. Depth of lesion remains a key factor in predicting scar outcome, highlighting the importance of individualized treatment planning.
